I paid $60 to participate in a fantasy football league against my co-workers several years ago. Every week we had to pick five teams that we predicted would win. I’ve always loved football but I’ve never enjoyed it so much or watched as diligently as I did the year that I had cold hard cash on the line.
Every weekend I’d print off my game tracking spreadsheet, roll up to our pilly old farm couch that the previous owners left, and plop down with a bowl of chili and my Nalgene bottle for a day of tabulating, cheering and occasional cursing. One late season game I watched my #1 pick for the week intercept and return for a touchdown. In my jubilation I stood up and spiked my water bottle before I even realized that I was throwing my precious Nalgene on the ground. I proceeded to dance around clumsily and kiss my husband on the cheek, obnoxiously.
Ok so what does this have to do with finance? Nothing really. Except that this is how I want people to feel about their finances. There have been times when I would describe my finances as stressful, draining, worrisome and depressing. I know many dread reviewing their bank statements and fear looking at balances.
But I want you to look forward to doing your weekly financial review. I want you to feel pumped up looking at your net worth. I want you to break out in a touchdown dance at the sight of your bank account balances. Try twerking or fist pumping. You don’t have to rush out to learn the Cruz salsa, a simple dab or Mile High salute might do, or maybe a classic goal post dunk is more your style. Experience that spike-your-water-bottle level bliss by becoming excellent in the field of finance. Excessive celebration is encouraged.
